The choice between weld-on and bolt-on gate hinges affects installation time, load capacity, and long-term maintenance. This guide explains the key differences and helps you choose the right hinge for each application.
Introduction: Why Hinge Selection Matters
Gate hinges are among the most mechanically stressed components in any gate system. They bear the full weight of the gate leaf, absorb wind and impact loads, and must operate reliably for decades with minimal maintenance. Choosing the wrong hinge type leads to gate sag, binding, premature wear, and in extreme cases, complete hinge failure.
For steel gate fabricators, the choice between weld-on hinges and bolt-on hinges is one of the first decisions to make in any gate project.
What Are Weld-On Gate Hinges?
Weld-on hinges (also called weldable hinges or weld hinges) are designed to be permanently attached to the gate frame and post by welding. The hinge plates are welded directly to the steel tube or flat bar of the gate frame, creating a connection that is as strong as the base material itself.
Weld-on hinges are available in several styles: flag hinges (H2-66x100, H2-200x140) for heavy-duty commercial and farm gates; bearing weld-on hinges (BH1+BH2, BH7) for smooth residential operation; and combination weld-on/bolt-on hinges (H3-83x104) that allow gate removal without cutting.
What Are Bolt-On Gate Hinges?
Bolt-on hinges are attached using bolts rather than welding. They are used for timber gate frames, aluminium gates, retrofit applications, and where the gate must be removable.
Key Differences
Weld-on hinges provide the highest connection strength (rated up to 800 kg per pair for the H2-200x140), are permanent, and require welding equipment. Bolt-on hinges are easier to install with basic tools, allow gate removal, but have lower load capacity (typically up to 400 kg per pair) and are better suited to timber and aluminium frames.
When to Use Weld-On Hinges
Choose weld-on hinges for: heavy steel gates over 200 kg per leaf; high-security applications where the hinge cannot be removed without cutting; commercial and industrial gates; and permanent installations.
When to Use Bolt-On Hinges
Choose bolt-on hinges for: timber gates and posts; aluminium gates; retrofit and repair work; and removable gates.
Corrosion Protection After Welding
When welding galvanized or powder-coated hinges, the heat burns away the surface treatment in the weld zone. Restore protection by applying cold galvanizing compound immediately after welding, or re-galvanize the complete assembly if the schedule allows.
